Testimonials
Fast forward to April 2024—I saw a Facebook post from a mother in New Hampshire searching for a donor to save her teenage daughter’s life. Something in me just knew I had to try. I clicked the link, which led me to Mass General in Boston, and filled out the form. Then in July, I got the call: they asked if I was still interested in helping my recipient, Jen. Without hesitation, I said yes!
In October, I flew to Boston for testing to see if I was a match. On October 7th, I got the news—I was a match!
While we didn’t have to pay any medical expenses, we were still responsible for travel, lodging, and food. That’s when I found Kidneys for Kindness (KFK) through a Facebook group. I called and spoke with Kelly, who walked me through what they do and how they could help. Two national programs had already turned us down, so we started asking for help online. No matter what, I was going to give Jen my kidney—whether we had the funds or not.
We flew to Boston on December 29th, and on January 7th, 2025, we had our surgeries. Everything went great! During my recovery in Boston, Kelly Dyer from KFK even came to visit, bringing gifts and an incredibly generous donation to help with travel costs. She is the real deal—someone who truly cares about helping others. Thanks to KFK’s support, I haven’t had to stress about finances and can focus entirely on healing.
This has been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful to everyone who made it possible.”
In the meantime, God was at work behind the scenes. My sister-in-law started a go fund me to help us with our bills that had been accumulating. This helped us out quite a bit. Through this my Stepfather heard what we were going through and wanted to help. His co- worker happened to be Kelly Dyer’s former husband. She is the founder of Kidneys for Kindness. He gave my stepfather her number. They talked and she was ready to help us. It’s amazing how God works. I hadn’t heard of Kidneys for Kindness before. Kelly called me one afternoon when I was home recovering from my donation surgery. She asked a few questions about our story and planned a time to come and meet us.
I was totally overwhelmed when she and her board members came to my home. They came in and presented us with such a generous gift of $2500. They brought flowers, their Kidneys for Kindness candle, and a bag of kFK swag. They were there for our family during a very scary time.
Taking the leap of faith to becoming a kidney donor meant that I needed to trust fully that the Lord would provide for our every need. He did. He does and He always will. He provided very skilled teams for my husband and myself at Lahey Hospital, an army of people to help us before during and after surgery. To top it all off we didn’t worry about being unable to pay the bills during that time.
My Stepfather planned a pancake breakfast to give back to Kidneys for Kindness. I was honored to be able to volunteer along side this amazing organization. I got a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes. Kelly and her team work tirelessly to get the word out. They support living donors by being there to talk, helping them financially and raising awareness to others. The sense of community is palpable. So many Kidneys for Kindness supporters showed up. Many people that heard our story through my Stepfather came and volunteered their time. The Gilford Sportsman’s Club even gave a generous donation and so many of their members came to support this cause. This organization is making a difference and touching so many lives. The ripple effect is real. Love is at the root of it all.
Consider getting tested to be an organ donor. If you cannot donate an organ, there is something you can do to be part of the solution. You can volunteer with Kidneys for Kindness, make a financial donation or attend one of their fundraising opportunities. Do something.”
Their help allowed me to focus on recovery without the added stress of financial burdens. The kindness and encouragement I received reassured me that I was not alone. Thanks to their support, my husband and I are now embracing a new chapter in our lives with renewed health and hope.
I encourage anyone considering kidney donation to reach out to Kidney for Kindness. Their compassion truly makes a difference. I will forever be thankful for their generosity and kindness.”
Back in early March, my wife started to feel like she had a cold that would go away with over-the-counter meds but it lingered for a few weeks. She was sick and visited urgent care several times over this period and the next few months. Throughout this she felt tired and nauseous. She wasn’t eating much and just overall exhausted and sick.
On March 27th, we took a trip where my wife couldn’t leave the hotel. We luckily made it back to NH urgent care where they drew labs. My wife’s creatinine was 13.1. For reference, a normal patient’s creatinine level is less than 1. After what felt like millions of scans, labs, tests, and a kidney biopsy the doctors diagnosed her with Granulomatosis with polyangiitis also known as Wegeners which is an autoimmune disorder that attacked her kidneys leading to stage 5 kidney failure. She started dialysis and we began the process to find a kidney donor.
I applied, along with 10 other friends and family members. I quickly moved through the process. Admittedly nervous, for several reasons but especially due to concerns for cost with both of us out of work and our little guy. As I moved forward, I was connected with Kelly from Kidneys for Kindness. Kelly was the first (and only!) kidney donor that I spoke to throughout the process. She empowered me, comforted me, shared information, and was someone I could talk to about my journey. Kelly truly lives her message and her leadership of Kidneys for Kindness amplifies its success and helps to deepen its impact. In addition to the power of Kelly’s connection, Kidneys for Kindness provided me with financial support in order to help pay for bills in my recovery as I was out of work and did not have “earned time” as I am self-employed. These funds helped take financial and emotional stress off our plates as we went through this major process. Kelly was available throughout the process for other needs as well and checked in on us as we went through surgery which was truly invaluable.
I am so grateful for Kelly, Kidneys for Kindness, and our families and friends that gathered around us during our kidney transplant process. This support allowed me to make an incredible difference in my wife and son’s (and my!) lives. We have time and health back which is absolutely priceless. Thank you doesn’t feel like enough. I am so grateful that Kidneys for Kindness continues to garner support and I would love to do whatever possible to help continue that gift for others as well. I know Kidneys for Kindness will continue to make a huge difference by providing opportunity the for others out there to feel empowered to donate too, and what an incredible legacy that is!”
